Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about Dunstan Photography, who we are, what we do, how booking works, and why a 19-year-old with a camera somehow ended up running multiple Christchurch businesses.
Who is behind Dunstan Photography?
Kia ora, I’m Cam Dunstan, also known by a few people as “Cam the camera man.” I’m the 19-year-old founder and owner of Dunstan Photography, based in Christchurch, New Zealand.
I first got into photography in October 2019 and officially started Dunstan Photography in July 2021. Since then, it has grown from me taking photos because I loved it, into an actual business covering school formals, portraits, corporate events, concerts, festivals, private events, and everything in between.
My team includes myself, Jonathan Brown, and Rahil Uddin. Depending on the job, it might just be me, or we can bring in multiple photographers for larger events.
Is Dunstan Photography your only business?
No. Dunstan Photography is one of the businesses I run. I also operate BBQ Cleaners Christchurch and Woodstackers Christchurch.
Photography is the creative side. BBQ Cleaners is the practical service side. Woodstackers is the seasonal, heavy-lifting side. They are different businesses, but they all come back to the same thing: turning up, doing the job properly, and building something real in Christchurch.
Why choose Dunstan Photography?
Dunstan Photography is professional without being awkward, affordable without being cheap-looking, and relaxed without being careless.
We are young enough to understand younger clients, school formals, music events, and social media, but experienced enough to handle proper event work, deadlines, crowds, venues, lighting, and pressure.
We’ve photographed small private gatherings of around 25 people through to large-scale events with crowds of over 50,000 people. Whether it’s one person, a couple, a school formal, or a packed venue, the goal is the same: make it easy, capture the moment, and deliver photos people actually want to keep.
What photography services do you offer?
We specialise in portrait and event photography, including:
- School formals
- Concerts, festivals, bars, and gigs
- Corporate events
- Private celebrations
- Portrait sessions
- Headshots and personal branding
- Music and nightlife photography
- Social media content
- Business and brand photography
Photoshoots start from $75 per hour. Larger packages depend on the time, location, number of photographers, equipment, editing requirements, and overall size of the job.
What is your service area?
We mainly work across Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region, but we are available for bookings across New Zealand depending on the event, travel, and timing.
Most of our work is Christchurch-based, but if the job makes sense, we can travel.
How do bookings work?
Bookings can be made through email, text, the website contact form, or social media. Just send through the event date, location, time, what you need covered, and any extra details that matter.
From there, I’ll confirm availability, give you a quote, and organise the booking. I try keep the process simple because nobody wants to spend three weeks emailing back and forward just to book a photographer.
How do payments and invoices work?
Invoices are usually sent through Squarespace on the next business day. Payment details will be included on the invoice.
If there are any payment issues, email office@dunstanphotography.com and I’ll sort it from there.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations are free up to 3 hours before the shoot. After that, a 25% cancellation fee may apply.
Rescheduling is always free where possible. Life happens, weather happens, people get sick, plans change. I’m not here to make that harder than it needs to be.
What’s included in your quotes and services?
Quotes can include photographer time, travel between locations, editing, equipment, lighting, backdrops, online delivery, and secure file storage.
Edited images are professionally delivered within 3–21 business days, depending on the size of the job. A small portrait shoot will usually be much quicker than a large formal or multi-hour event.
A 5-year Google Drive folder and backup are included with standard deliveries, so you are not just getting a random link that disappears after a week.
What gear do you use?
Gear depends on the job, but we use Canon camera bodies, prime and zoom lenses, flash, memory cards, batteries, lighting equipment, backdrops, and other accessories where required.
For larger events, we can bring extra lighting, multiple photographers, and additional equipment depending on what is needed. The gear matters, but knowing how to use it matters more.
Do you handle large events?
Yes. Dunstan Photography has experience with small events, medium-sized bookings, and large-scale events with crowds of over 50,000 people.
For larger events, I can work solo or bring in Jonathan Brown, Rahil Uddin, or additional support depending on the size and requirements of the job.
Do you photograph school formals?
Yes. School formals are one of the main types of events we cover. We can provide photography for arrivals, group photos, candid moments, dancefloor photos, couples, friend groups, staff, and general event coverage.
Depending on the size of the formal, we can also organise multiple photographers, lighting, and backdrop-style setups.
Do you photograph businesses and brands?
Yes. Alongside events and portraits, we can photograph businesses, staff, products, services, and social media content.
Running BBQ Cleaners Christchurch and Woodstackers Christchurch also means I understand how useful strong photos are for a business. Good photos make a service look real, trusted, and active, especially when people are deciding whether to book you or not.
Can I get raw files?
Edited JPEG images are the standard deliverable. Raw files are not usually included.
Raw files may be available by request for an additional fee or under special circumstances, but most clients are better off receiving the finished edited images.
How long does delivery take?
Most galleries are delivered within 3–21 business days depending on the size of the job.
Smaller shoots are usually quicker. Larger events, school formals, and jobs with hundreds or thousands of images naturally take longer because every delivered photo still needs to be sorted, edited, checked, and exported properly.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If bad weather affects an outdoor shoot, we can reschedule at no extra cost or move to a suitable indoor location.
Weather-related rescheduling does not incur a cancellation fee. Christchurch weather does what Christchurch weather wants, so we work around it.
